The J/80, a benchmark in sports sailboat history!
September 14th, 2020 newsThe J/80 – a benchmark in sports sailboat history!
It is rare these days to observe on a start line such a large one-design fleet, launched over 25 years ago! Over the years, the J/80 has established itself in numerous regattas by its design, its performance and simplicity but also by its build quality – it’s made to last!
Launched in 1993 and with over 1,600 units sold worldwide, the J/80 is still selling this year – 22 new units! The next number (n° 1682), will be delivered in February 2021.
Famous with all clubs and racing sailors, this 8m monohull, designed by Rod Johnstone and widely built in France, is a real bestseller in the racing world.
Originally designed as a sporty dayboat offering a cabin for short cruising with its efficient hull, optimized deck layout, large cockpit, powerful ballast, over the years it has proven its ability to be fast, but robust and multi-purpose at the same time. It is today the most popular sailboat in the world of racing! The first hull built in 1993 still has every chance of winning a regatta against a newer boat.
The jib furler and the asymmetric spinnaker (revolutionary at the time) make this one-design sailboat easy to handle and adaptable. Indeed, it is suitable for all generations who wish to familiarize themselves with racing or simply enjoy sailing in complete confidence in all conditions.
Exported around the world and represented in more than 21 countries, the J/80 also benefits from very active owners’ associations. The J/80 Class is the largest monohull class in France. Every year World and European Championships are organized as well as the Coupe de France, which includes the Spi Ouest France. It is through these many competitions that you can meet, in a J/80, the young athletes of the French national team and weekend sailors, as well as the skippers of the Vendée Globe!
All of this makes the J/80 a reference point in the history of sports sailboats!
