Review by Gustavo Menezes ½ 14
This movie is about a boy from a fictitious misery-ridden country whose official language is English, and who, much like a stereotypical Asian martial arts fighter, embodies the spirit of his people, a mythical force of nature called "the ginga". The ginga was passed down from the African slaves who practiced a martial art called Capoeira, and who, after the slavery was abolished, came out of the jungles to create football so they could keep the ginga alive.
Now, as a Brazilian (from the actual country, that is - not the fictitious one this movie is set in), I've sadly grown accustomed to seeing these kinds of stereotypes all over foreign movies, but - fortunately - it never ceases to…

„He WAS, He IS and will always BE the best of all.“
Hi everybody, I’m such a huge Sport(s movie) fan, it doesn’t matter what sport the pic is about, it doesn’t matter if the story based on real events or is just fictionally tale. I love the emotion and tense.
And it’s the same with this film, about the young years of the greatest football player and sportsman of all time... Pelé.Just a quick review to a quick little film.
Long years before the era of Maradona, Zidane, C. Ronaldo and Messi there was one player that change the game for all time. The motion picture starts with the 1950 World Cup final between Uruguay and Brazil and… -

I'm surprised they didn't show Pelé adding goals to his total goal tally by scoring against kids on the streets.
So, I'm being told that you have a Brazillian cast (ok mostly Brazillian) and you still put every actor speaking english instead of portuguese? This is the first thing that doesn't make sense to me, but it's a common staple of films. The other thing is how they could make Pelé's style of play look so boring. There were moments during the matches where the opposition seemed to not try and walk at a slow speed just to let him through.
It's one of those rags-to-riches stories that are too simplistic and almost mystical in a way but without magic to the story.

Prior to watching this film, my previous knowledge of Pelé was that he was a really good football player from Brazil. That's it. So, I didn't necessarily have an inherent interest in watching this film, as I never played or watched football myself. But I do like sports films, so I figured I would give this a try.
As far as sports films go, it's OK. I would have liked to see more gameplay to get a sense of Pelé's skills and how he improved as a player. The scenes with him and his father kicking fruit were interesting. But what about when he actually started playing professionally? I felt that there was a disconnect between showing how played when…

I laughed, I cried, I cheered, and I fell in love with soccer all over again. Also big shoutout to Seu Jorge, he totally stole the show as Pele's dad.

And with this strange origin story of the legendary Pelé, I've now logged 2000 films on Letterboxd.
The reason why I chose to watch this film is also the reason that I haven't logged a lot of films recently: The World Cup. And in connection to that - has there ever been a more spectacular national side than Brazil with Pele leading the line? Arguably not.
Pelé: Birth of a Legend is a film of many weaknesses but also one that manages to romanticize the 1958 Brazil team and the style that exctited the world back then and continues to influence the current Brazilian team. Jogo bonito (The Beautiful Game) is celebrated here and so is the man in the… -

More like Ginga: Rebirth of the Brazilian style football with a special appearance from Pelé, literally. Quite didactic but if you love the game you would enjoy this.
