Facilities - Team Bath (2024)

Our renowned, fully-accessible £35 million Team Bath Sports Training Village (STV) is based at the heart of the University of Bath campus and is open seven days a week to the public, students, staff and elite athletes.

A world-class multi-sport training environment with fitness, coaching, physio and sport science facilities all under one roof, the STV has indoor and outdoor facilities to accommodate more than 50 sports, regularly hosts major international competitions such as the Fed Cup tennis and Modern Pentathlon World Championships, and is home to a host of Olympic, Paralympic and World medallists.

The inspirational Team Bath Gym & Fitness Centre – open to public, students and staff – underwent an extensive £450,000 refurbishment in the summer of 2024 and features nearly 200 workout stations across three distinct gym zones, as well as two dedicated studio spaces hosting more than 60 group exercise classes a week.

Membership packages are available, while the gym and classes can also be accessed on a pay-as-you-go basis.

London 2012 Legacy Swimming Pool

Our 50m swimming pool – used by Olympic, Paralympic, World and Commonwealth champions – is open to the public on a daily basis.

A retractable swim wall allows the eight 50m lanes to be split into 16 25m lanes, while a £30,000 underwater camera system enables elite swimmers to analyse their stroke.

We also have a Hydro Pool which is bookable for shared or exclusive use, and hosts our popular parent and child swimming classes for children aged from three months to pre-school.

Multi-Purpose Sports Hall and Arena

Featuring sprung-wood floors and divisible into three separate courts, our busy Sports Hall – available for public hire – hosts such sports as badminton, frisbee, gymnastics, netball and volleyball.

It can also be transformed into an arena space for spectator events like Team Bath Netball fixtures, the annual Strength in Depth cross-fit team challenge and regional gymnastics, trampolining and badminton championships. Its flexible seating configuration, with space for up to 2,000 spectators, makes it ideal for sports events, concerts, awards ceremonies, conferences, corporate events, exhibitions and much more.

Performance Hub

This large mixed-use area is home to a recently-built Student Performance Gym providing a dedicated space for student-athletes on the Team Bath performance sport programmes to train.

The spacious, high-roofed hall also has a range of other uses including indoor athletics training; Team Bath Tribe trampolining and multi-sport classes; and student sport activities.

Indoor and outdoor tennis courts

The STV houses eight indoor, eight outdoor and two clay courts – all within close proximity and all available to book by students, staff and the public for recreational tennis.

We are often a chosen venue for Aegon GB Pro-Series competitions, drawing some of the most talented players from around the world, and in February 2019 we successfully hosted the first Fed Cup tie to be staged in Great Britain for 26 years.

Indoor and outdoor athletics facilities

Our floodlit 400m outdoor athletics track and 120m indoor sprint track allows athletes to train in all weathers and conditions. Both are available to book, meaning young athletes and recreational and club-standard athletes can train at the same venue used by Olympians and Paralympians.

Judo dojo

Based on a traditional Japanese style, our martial arts dojo has been a training base for some of Britain’s top judoka including double Olympic medallist Kate Howey, Olympic silver medallist Gemma Gibbons, Commonwealth champion Megan Fletcher and fellow Olympians Prisca Awiti-Alcaraz, Emmanuel Nartey and Ben Fletcher.

It is also used by community clubs across the South West, student groups and for our Team Bath Tribe judo sessions.

The UK’s only bobsleigh and skeleton push-start track

The University of Bath is home to the UK’s only bobsleigh and skeleton push-start track, used by British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association athletes who base their training here.

Our 140m push-start track enables Britain’s bobsleigh and skeleton athletes to hone their starts away from the ice. Since it was opened in 2002, skeleton athletes have won seven medals for Team GB at the Winter Olympic Games including gold-medallists Amy Williams (2010) and Lizzy Yarnold (2014 and 2018), while the four-man bobsleigh team won bronze in 2014.

Pentathlon Hall

The STV has been home to Pentathlon GB‘s National Training Centre since 1998, with a host of Olympic medallists – including reigning champions Joe Choong and Kate French – honing their fencing and laser-shooting skills in the indoor Pentathlon Hall.

The fencing facilities are also used by student and community clubs, whilethere are two more outdoor shooting ranges on site – one next to the athletics track and the other next to the push-start track.

Wheelchair Fencing National Training Centre

A spacious and purpose-built facility in the Sports Training Village from where the world-leading British wheelchair fencing squad – including Paralympic and World Champions Piers Gilliver and Dimitri Coutya – prepare for national and international competition.

Hockey, football, lacrosse, rugby and cricket pitches

The STV is home to more than 20 outdoor pitches, including two floodlit all-weather hockey pitches and a 3G training pitch. The artificial pitches are available to hire for five-a-side football.

Our six dedicated rugby pitches are often utilised by international squads such as Australia (men) and England (women) ahead of the 2015 and 2022 Rugby World Cup tournaments respectively.

Physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, sports massage, nutritional advice and physiological testing – these are just some of the services delivered by our dedicated team of highly-qualified therapists and practitioners to performance sport and student-athletes at the Team Bath Sports Training Village.

We also have a Sport Science Lab which offers a wide range of physiological and fitness tests for elite and recreational sportspeople and clubs, as well as hands-on educational opportunities for school pupils

Exclusive high-performance sport facilities

In addition to the public exercise facilities, there is a separate High-Performance Gym which is used exclusively by Olympians, Paralympians and other full-time athletes to fine-tune their strength and conditioning training.

There is also an Athlete Health and Performance Studio, located in the Performance Hub, which is used by UK Sports Institute support staff working with high-performance athletes – including British Swimming,Pentathlon GBand theBritish Bobsleigh & Skeleton Association (BBSA)– for collaborative rehabilitation.

Sports Cafe

A café in the Team Bath Sports Training Village serving healthy hot and cold breakfasts, sandwiches, bagels, pasta and frozen yoghurts, as well as smoothies, shakes, coffee and tea. It is fully open to the public, as well as students, sportspeople and staff.

Other sports spaces

The Founders Hall, located next to the Students’ Union on campus, is a traditional sports hall used for netball, five-a-side football, basketball and much more, as well as careers fairs and other events. There are also squash courts which are available to book.

The Sulis Club is located about a mile away from the University of Bath’s Claverton campus and features grass sports pitches and some changing rooms, as well as on-site car parking.
